2019-2020 6th Grade English Class (Period 2) Assignments

Read the attached poem and create a Google Doc and tell me your thoughts.

Submit any materials here you will need printed. These are due NO LATER THAN WED. APRIL 1ST.

The debate will occur Thursday, April 2nd.

Use the articles in the assigned Newsela text set to prepare for the debate on whether or not zoos are harmful to animals.

-Read three of the articles from the text set.
-As you read, highlight in RED the drawbacks. Highlight in GREEN the benefits.
-Take the quiz for each article.
-Then, go back for a second read of the articles to gather the best text evidence representing both sides. Using the evidence found supporting both sides, fill out the benefits/drawbacks text evidence organizer.

Choose TWO articles from the text set to read. As you read, highlight the claim made by both sides of the issue.
Take the quiz for both articles.
In a Google Doc, type the name of each article you read, then state which side of the issue you agree with and WHY.

Using the printed directions as a guide, create a survey over a topic of interest that has different opinions. You will need to ask an OBJECTIVE question or make an OBJECTIVE statement about the topic, meaning, your own opinion should not be evident. Your questions should also not show your bias toward the subject. Use the Example Survey and Example Survey Presentation links below as guides for your survey and presentation. The rubric is shown on this assignment.

When you complete your survey, share it with your classmates to get responses. Attach your survey and the survey presentation to this assignment.

Think about a topic that you are interested in and find an interesting fact about that topic. Then, find three examples to support that topic. Complete the graphic organizer with the fact and examples, then in a Google doc, write a paragraph following this format:

1ST SENTENCE: State the fact in the center of your organizer.
2ND, 3RD, 4TH SENTENCE: State your supporting examples in the three boxes.
5TH SENTENCE: State how your fact is supported by your examples.

As a group, read your text and determine what the issue is and the points of view on the issue. Then, using the attached Google doc template, write a paragraph in the following format:

1ST SENTENCE: State what the issue is about.
2ND SENTENCE: Identify the groups that are debating the issue.
3RD SENTENCE: Summarize the point of view of one group.
4TH SENTENCE: Summarize the point of view of the other group.

In a Google doc, write two paragraphs -

Paragraph 1 - write a paragraph using details from the profile you wrote about yourself. Start it off with this sentence: Here is how I see myself.
Paragraph 2 - write a paragraph using details from the profile your partner wrote about you. Start it off with this sentence: Here is someone else's view of me.
